PE at Wistaston Academy

At Wistaston Academy, we pride ourselves on the delivery of the PE curriculum to the whole school and the opportunities we offer for all children to participate at level 1, 2 and 3 competitions.

In July 2013 we were awarded the Gold standard Kitemark for PE (we were one of the only schools in the area to achieve the gold standard), and we have maintained this status every year since. Additionally we were awarded primary school of the year at the Cheshire East Sports Awards- this has meant automatic qualification for the Cheshire and Warrington Sports Awards in June 2014.

We have fantastic club participation. A variety of clubs are provided for KS1 and KS2, which are changed termly/half termly to fit in with the Level 2 games calendar. These clubs are taught by specialist PE teachers, class teachers and outside providers (including Cheshire Dance, MMU students and professional gym coaches). Sports camps are run through the holidays by the PE staff. This gives the children the opportunity to socialise with their friends; maintain a high level of fitness and have friendly competitions doing activities they enjoy.

Each child receives a minimum of 2 hours of PE a week. As a result of the school sport funding, from September all PE lessons will be taught by specialist PE teachers (providing on the spot training for all class teachers). All areas of the PE curriculum are covered to an outstanding level by well trained staff. In addition to a specialist PE assistant teacher, several class teachers are PE specialist. Several members of staff have a range of specialist coaching qualifications for several sports including: football, netball, swimming, athletics, hockey, tennis, tag rugby and gymnastics.

We participate successfully in many level 2 games including: boys and girls football, netball, hockey, tag rugby, athletics, basketball, dodgeball, sports hall athletics, cricket and cheerleading. Over the past couple of years we have won several of the Crewe and Nantwich Level 2 competitions including: netball, girl’s football, dodgeball, basketball and sportshall competitions. As a result we have qualified and participated in level 3 county competitions in these sports. This year we were successful in winning the county Dodgeball tournament.
