Year 6 A - Miss Boobyer 2019 - 2020

01.06.20 update

Hello! I hope that you all had a lovely half term.

Here are your learning tasks for this week:

Maths

Please continue with the White Rose Maths home learning: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

When you have watched the video, follow the link to BBC Bitesize for further learning. This week's topic is fractions, decimals and percentages.

In addition to this, I have also set you some arithmetic and reasoning questions on Purple Mash.

Please also continue to use TT Rockstars and IXL.

English

2Do tasks have been set on Purple Mash; please make sure that all of these are completed by Friday. Your tasks this week revolve around Fantastic Beasts. Please read the extract from it at the bottom of this page to complete the reading activity and to help out with the writing activity.

Spellings to learn can be found at the bottom of this page along with the Choose the Right Word activity. Please practise and complete both of these before doing the activity on PurpleMash.

Please continue to use BBC Bitesize, MyOn, Accelerated Reader and Spelling Shed.

History

We are starting a history unit that focuses on the 20th century. Your task this week involves creating a timeline to show all of the key events in Britain in the 20th century. I have attached a document outlining the task at the bottom of this page.

French

As we come to the end of the academic year, we are starting to review our French.

This week’s task on PurpleMash is to write simple sentences about your family in French. Remember to practise saying them too.

Science

This half term, our topic is electricity. You should already be familiar with the different electrical symbols. Refresh your memory using BBC Bitesize: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zq99q6f/articles/zs7g4j6

Then complete the activity on Purple Mash.

Computing

This week, I'd like you to have a go a creating a 3D game on Purple Mash. If you're not sure how to do this, remember you can watch the help videos if you click on the icon in the top right corner (the green play button inside a film strip).

I'd like your game to include both rewards to collect and things to avoid. You can customise these however you like. I'd also like your game to have at least 3 levels.

Please also remember to contribute to the class blog.

Music

Remember to use your Yumu login to access the Charanga music resources.

25.05.20 update

Hi everyone. It is half-term this week so there will be no new home learning set. Please take this week to have a well-deserved break!

If you take any photos that you would like to share, please send them to year6@wistastonacademytrust.co.uk. It's always lovely to see what you have been getting up to!

Take care and have a lovely week.

18.05.20 update

Hello everyone!

I was so pleased to see some of you participating in the TT Rockstars battle last week and I was very impressed with your scores. Congratulations for winning your battle - I am proud of your dedication!

Here are your home learning tasks for this week:

Maths

As with last week, please watch the White Rose Maths home learning videos. You can then follow the link to the BBC Bitesize lessons. This week's focus is on multiplying decimals.

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

I have also set you some maths games on Purple Mash, which I think you will enjoy!

English

2Do tasks have been set on Purple Mash; please make sure that all of these are completed by Friday. I have set you a main writing task of writing a thank you letter to a healthcare worker; please complete the BBC Bitesize tasks on these first.

Your spellings are a recap of the Year 5/6 spellings words that we focus on throughout our lessons - hopefully you've remembered our strategies.

Because it is the last week, most of you do not have a reading task on PurpleMash this week. Please make sure you are using and quizzing on MyOn/Accelerated Reader.

Science

For science this week, I'd like you to continue with the National Oak Academy lessons. Your task is to complete Lesson 3, which is a learning review about the different animal kingdoms.

https://www.thenational.academy/year-6/foundation/what-are-the-different-animal-kingdoms-year-6-wk3-3#slide-1

Geography

I have set you some quizzes on Purple Mash. The first is a short quiz on physical features, which is a learning review.

The other quiz requires you to use your computing skills. You have been sent '2Investigate' in your 2Dos. When you launch the programme, it gives you a choice of databases. Choose the 'Countries' database. You will need to keep this open whilst you complete the 2Do called 'Countries Database: Quiz'. To answer the questions on this quiz, you will need to search the database.

Computing

Thank you for continuing to engage with our class blog - the supportive comments are wonderful. Please continue to post updates on there and interact with each other.

In addition to this, I have set you another coding challenge. Once again, the games you have been creating are incredibly impressive! Don't forget to read the steps in the 'files to download' section.

French

Please continue to use the French food grid at the bottom of the page to revise.

Your task this week is on PurpleMash and is read a menu of food and drink from a cafe and answer questions on it in English. Please make the most of the French Foods to learn document at the bottom of this page.

RE

To continue our learning on Buddhism, please have a go at the artwork sent my Mrs Walsh that is linked to this topic.

Art

In addition to Mrs Walsh's art class page ideas, she would like to challenge you to have a go at creating some Buddhist art. Have a look at some of the stylised images of the Buddha meditating, of a lotus flower emerging from the murky waters. See if you can create your own artistic expression of the ideas or origins of Buddhism. Observational drawing that includes hatching and cross hatching would be a good way to start. then think about adding translucent colours with watercolours or other water-based paints. Mrs Walsh would love to see your results, so please email them to school!

PSHCE

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, and the theme is kindness. I have added some activities to the 'files to download' section below. These are little acts of kindness that you could do to make yourself and others feel good. Remember to take time to look after yourself and your mental well-being.

13.05.20 - National Numeracy Day

Today is National Numeracy Day!! It's a day to spend celebrating our number skills and completing lots of number-based games and activities. Once you have had a go at these challenges, you can add any extra elements to your game and then send it back to me!

French

Please continue to use the French food grid at the bottom of the page to revise.

We are recapping French words for sport this week. The children have learnt these before, and they will be aided by most of the words being similar to their English equivalent.

Here are a few key words that they should recap and then they can test out their knowledge on a quiz on Purple Mash.

Le foot

Le rugby

Le cricket

La danse

La natation

Le tennis

Interessant

Excitant

Je joue (I play)

C’est (It is)

A mon avis (in my opinion)

Geography

This week, you are going to be thinking about your local area. Find out about the three following things:

Housing

Using Google Street View, have a look at the housing in your area. Are the houses similar? Are there different types of houses? Why is there this type of housing? Who lives in your area? Has the housing always been the same?

Industries

Research the major industries in your area. Who are the biggest employers in your area? Have the industries always been the same? Have the types of jobs in your area changed over time?

Public Services

Finally, find out what public services there are in your area. You might want to look at: education, health care, fire service, law enforcement, postal service, libraries, transport, waste management, parks and playgrounds.

When you have done this research, complete the leaflet on Purple Mash.

French

Hopefully you have started to learn some French words for food using the resource below. After you think you’ve learnt them all, take the quiz on Purple Mash.

Continue to use this clip and have conversations with your family in French.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z82kjxs

You can watch this clip and begin to use the following phrases:

Vous désirez? – What would you like ?

Je voudrais… I would like…

RE

We are continuing our learning on Buddhism. Last week you should have watched Siddhartha and the Swan (you can read it here) and this week your task is to complete a storyboard recapping the story. Look carefully at the questions on Purple Mash and make sure you answer them in your learning.

BBC Bitesize - What is Buddhsm?

Science

Please start this half term by completing the fossils quiz set for you on Purple Mash, as this is a learning review.

Our science topic for this half term is 'We are dinosaur hunters'.

Your task this week is to research dinosaurs and find out some interesting facts. You have been set a 2Do to create a dinosaur fact file, using the information that you have found out. Remember to take care with your spelling and punctuation.

Here are some useful websites to help you with your research:

https://kids.kiddle.co/Dinosaur

https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/dinosaurs.html

http://dinodatabase.com/dinorcds.asp

You can use these questions to help guide and develop your research:

  1. Were dinosaurs stupid? What evidence can we use to justify our ideas?
  2. Are dinosaurs important? Explain how, if we didn't know about them, what the world would be like today.
  3. Did dinosaurs fly?
  4. Did dinosaurs have two brains? What evidence is there for it?

Geography

Use the link below to complete a learning review on longitude and latitude. There is a quiz towards the bottom of the webpage:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvsfr82/articles/zd4rmfr

We will start looking at food and how to order at a restaurant.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z82kjxs

You can watch this clip and begin to use the following phrases:

Vous désirez? – What would you like ?

Je voudrais… I would like…

Complete the sentence using the French Foods document at the bottom of this page or Google Translate (just translate one word).

There is also a word search to complete. Remember to translate the words after you have completed them – only use Google Translate if you need to.

RE

We are starting a new unit on Buddhism; this will be the children’s first time learning about this religion.

BBC Bitesize has a page that introduces the topic. Be sure to write some notes as you read through it and take the quiz at the end of the page – try to get 5/5.

Watch Siddhartha and the Swan on YouTube. Think about the following questions:

  • How did Siddhartha treat the swan?
  • What does this tell us about how Buddhists treat animals?

The Monkey King is played straight after that story. Think about the following questions:

  • What was the human King like at the start of the story? What was he like at the end?
  • Why did he change?

At this strange time, we would like to make the Easter break as happy as possible for the lovely children in our classes. With that in mind, over the next two weeks, we will not be setting school tasks but instead provide you with a list of ideas for things that you can do together as a family.

The list of activities can be found in the 'files to download' section below. It is called: 'Easter Holiday Letter'.

I will be continuing to check my emails so please send pictures of any activities you complete over the Easter break - I would love to see what you have been up to!

Please take care and continue to stay safe at home.

Miss Boobyer

Thanks,

Miss Boobyer

31.03.20 update

Before school closed, children were given a timetable of what a week of home learning might look like. This was to help ensure that they still had a structured routine and were completing the tasks set for them during this time. I'm aware that some children were absent and did not receive this. I have uploaded the example timetable into the 'files to download' section. You do not have to follow this, but it is there if you would like it as guidance for what your child should be doing at home.

Thanks!

30.03.20 update

Hi everyone!

Maths: I have added some maths work to the files section below. There are code crackers, arithmetic questions and reasoning questions. I have also added the answers for the arithmetic and reasoning questions so that you can check your work! If you have any problems, please send me an email on Purple Mash. Well done to those children who have been regularly checking their Purple Mash account and completing the 2Dos.

Finally, don't forget that White Rose Maths are releasing maths lessons that can be completed at home. They have now released Week 2:

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

If you haven't completed the Week 1 lessons then please go back to those first.

Writing/History: On PurpleMash, I have set the task of writing about city-states in Ancient Greece. You have already learnt about Athens and Olympia and you can do further research on Sparta on DK Find Out As a challenge, you can find out more about each city state using your own research. Spend some time doing this and make sure your grammar and punctuation is accurate.

Science: Our learning for this week is reflectionKey questions to consider are:
- What happens when something is reflected?
- How do we see our reflection?
- What surfaces are best for reflection?
- Can we use mirrors to change the direction of light?
(Click here to play a game that demonstrates this - and it's quite challenging and fun!)

BBC Bitesize have information on this as well.

Sharing our learning: I have now set up a class blog on Purple Mash where you can share what you have been doing at home! On the Purple Mash homepage, click on the green 'Sharing' tab at the top and 'Shared blogs'. You should see the 6A blog on there.

--------

Hi Year 6!

I hope that you and your families are well and that you are staying safe during this time.

Alongside your home learning packs, Mr Burke and I have been setting you 2Dos on Purple Mash. Please make sure to keep checking it regularly if you have access to the Internet. Don't forget that you can email me via Purple Mash. I have sent you all an email already so you should be able to find it in your alerts. If it has not come through in your alerts, search '2Email' and there should be a message in your inbox.

If you are looking for websites to use for home learning, use the 'Educational Websites' tab. In your home learning packs you have your usernames and passwords for: IXL, Purple Mash, TT Rockstars, Numbots, Charanga and Spelling/Maths Shed.

Other work may be added to the bottom of this class page (in the files section).

For some lessons on ratio, use the following link:

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

You can watch the videos, complete the worksheet activities and then check the answers.

Make sure that you are reading regularly. Use the myON.co.uk website to access a range of books that can be read online (use your AR login to sign into your account.)

You can also now quiz on AR at home! This is the link you will need to use:
