Year 5 B - Miss Williams 2017 - 2018

Miss Williams

Autumn Term

My name is Miss Williams and welcome to year 5. I hope you've had a fantastic Summer break and you are looking forward to the year ahead. The autumn term, we will be focusing on a range of aspects within our curriculum.

Maths

This term some of our key focuses are place value, understanding the values up to one million where we will compare, order and round numbers. We will use this understanding to perform addition and subtraction using 4-6 digit numbers.

information of where to find extra home-learning activities, don't hesitate to ask Miss Williams.

Literacy

In Literacy, children will be reading There is a boy in the girls’ bathroom by Louis Sacher and working on a range of activities in writing and guided reading. We will be using the book to help us write a biography in the first few weeks. Writing is strongly encouraged at home, and you can certainly encourage your child to up-level their vocabulary.

Geography

This half term we will be focusing on ‘How our country has changed?’, the children will find out about the regions of the United Kingdom, discovering how some of these areas have changed over time. The children will research how specific areas of the UK have been affected by change, before conducting fieldwork. A great thing to do with your child would be to look at a wide range of maps and explore their uses. They could use the internet, OS maps or even a route planner to plan a simple route to a place you are visiting.

Science

We will be exploring Earth and space. If you have anything related to space at home - books, artefacts or information - feel free to send them in and we will share them during science lessons.

Music

In Music, children will start to combine their knowledge of recorders and percussion instruments, in order to establish a class orchestra. The Music lessons will be taught by Music for Life which will enable the children to develop or foster a love for music in its many forms.

PE

In 5B, our PE lessons will be taught by Mrs Adamczyk and I, our days are Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon. Just a reminder that ear rings should be removed or taped before the lesson, and long hair must be tied back!

Please make sure that your child has a named kit that is suitable for indoor PE and outdoor PE as we will be outside in most weathers. This should include: pumps, shorts, trousers (in winter), PE top and a jumper.

PE is part of the National Curriculum, and as such, only a medical note can excuse your child from it.

Attendance

Children will be allowed in the classroom from 8:40am. The door closes at 8:50am, when the register is taken. Any children arriving after this time are late. We ask parents/carers to accompany late children to the office, where a reason for lateness and the number of minutes late will be recorded on to their child’s attendance file.

All children are encouraged to achieve 100% attendance over a weekly period. If the whole class achieves 100% attendance over this weekly period, then the class is rewarded. The class is quite aware of their attendance, so try not to let any minor illnesses prevent your child from attending school. Rest assured if the illness worsens then we will contact you.

Home Learning

Spelling will be given out every Monday to be practiced at home for a spelling test on Friday. Parents are encouraged to read with their children at least three times a week. This is vital, not only to increase your child's confidence, but to also nurture a love of reading.
