Monday 1st June

Good morning everyone! We hope you’ve had a lovely half-term break. See below for your learning for the week ahead.

Maths

On White Rose Maths, there are no longer activity sheets to complete. However, you can still watch the videos and then click the link to the BBC Bitesize daily lesson, which will be linked to the same learning: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

‘Arithmetic 4’ is now available in the ‘Files to Download’ section. On there, you will find five days’ worth of arithmetic questions. Third Space Learning have some other resources that are free for parents. If you would like to sign up, please see our parents’ guide in the ‘Files to Download’ section.

Literacy

Linking with our Geography work this week, we would like you to write a poem based on carnivals (it will make more sense when you see your Geography work).

Your poem can be written in any structure that you choose. It can rhyme, but it doesn’t have to!

This task has been set as a 2Do on PurpleMash.

Reading

This week, we would like you to read the non-fiction texts called ‘Brazil’ and ‘Amazon’ and then answer the ‘Guided reading Questions’. All of these files are at the bottom of this page.

You can send us a picture of your answers to year5@wistastonacademytrust.co.uk

As always, continue reading and quizzing using myON and Accelerated Reader!

Spelling

Summer 2 Week 1 Spelling PowerPoints have been added to the ‘Files to Download’ section.

Science

As part of our ‘Super Scientists’ work this half-term, we are looking at forensic science. We would love for you to do some research about what forensic science is and any techniques used.

This website could be a good place to start https://kids.kiddle.co/Forensic_science.

Fingerprints are one of the most well-known tools in forensic science. What do you think your fingerprints look like? Try this home activity to take a closer look https://www.scholastic.com/parents/school-success/learning-toolkit-blog/be-fingerprint-detective.html. You could include the rest of the family and compare your fingerprints to see how they differ!

French

We know that lots of you have been going on many nature walks recently, which has been lovely to see! Our French scheme have developed some French home learning activities all about nature walks. See the activity sheet in the ‘Files to Download’ section.

Geography

This half term, we will be learning about the Amazon Rainforest. But first, to get a little background knowledge, we would like you to research the country Brazil (60% of the rainforest is in Brazil!)

First, you will need to do some research. Take a look at the website to help you get started: https://www.kids-world-travel-guide.com/brazil-facts.html

Then, your task is to create a fact file about Brazil. This has been set as a 2Do on PurpleMash.

30 Days Wild

For part of the Wildlife Trust’s ’30 Days Wild’ campaign, we have added some ideas for activities in the ‘Files to Download’ section. There is lots of fun activities for you to be doing including: Making a bird nest; Designing your own bird; A-Z of nature; Natural sounds map; Race for a rainbow; and studying a mini beast. Be sure to check what Mrs Walsh is putting on the school’s Facebook page too; there will be lots of exciting activities about committing ‘random acts of wildness’ – sounds great!!

As always, we love to see photos of the activities that you do! Send any photos to year5@wistastonacademytrust.co.uk

Parents – Mrs Walsh would like to share any photos received on Facebook. If you send us any photos, please add a note at the bottom of your email to say that you give us permission to share them!

Enjoy!

Maths

Well done to 5B for their victory in the TT Rockstars competition last Wednesday and a special congratulations to our top three contributors from both classes as well! We hope you enjoyed National Numeracy Day.

On White Rose Maths, there are no longer activity sheets to complete. However, you can still watch the videos and then click the link to the BBC Bitesize daily lesson, which will be linked to the same learning: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

Natwest have developed some more MoneySense home learning resources. You can find the resources about saving money and how we can pay for things in the ‘Files to Download’ section.

Finally, ‘Arithmetic 3’ is now available in the ‘Files to Download’ section. On there, you will find five days’ worth of arithmetic questions. Third Space Learning have some other resources that are free for parents. If you would like to sign up, please see our parents’ guide in the ‘Files to Download’ section.

Literacy/Geography

This week’s Literacy task combines Geography and poetry!

We are giving you the opportunity to enter a poetry competition with Divine Chocolate and Christian Aid Poetry.

This year's theme: Where does the chocolate journey begin?

Ideas for the theme of your poem…

Cocoa grows on trees:

The key ingredient in chocolate is cocoa. Most of the cocoa you eat comes from the rainforests of West Africa, where poor farmers tend their cocoa trees on small family farms. This is where the chocolate journey begins.

The journey through history:

Among the Mayans and Aztecs of Central America where cocoa originated, cocoa beans were so important they were used as money. Nobles drank cocoa at royal feasts. In modern times, chocolate has come to symbolise romantic love and luxury.

From bean to bar:

Cocoa comes from the seeds of cocoa pods, which grow on the cocoa tree. Farmers harvest the cocoa, ferment it and dry it out in the sun, and then send it to factories to be made into delicious chocolate.

Into the future:

Changing weather patterns make it harder to grow cocoa, driving cocoa farmers to move and cut down the rainforest for new farms, which makes climate change worse. Through Fairtrade, we can support cocoa farmers to farm in a better way and protect the forest.

Remember this is the Divine Poetry Competition - if you write about chocolate products, don't write about other chocolate companies!

Are there prizes?

Yes! The winning students will get a film of their poem being read by this year's guest judge, Onjali Raúf, winner of the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2019.

They will get book tokens. And they will get lots of delicious Divine Chocolate goodies!

All entries must be sent to year5@wistastonacademytust.co.uk before 4pm on Monday 25th May as this is when I will be submitting our poems!

Your poem can be written in any style that you like, it can rhyme, but equally it doesn’t have to!

Don’t rush!!!! You have a week to complete it! We want well written poems. You may want to do some background research on the journey of making chocolate to ensure that your poem is factual as well as entertaining.

Good luck – we look forward to reading your poems!

Reading

Keep on reading!

Remember, there are thousands of books that you can access on myON:

https://www.myon.co.uk/login/index.html

Just a reminder that Oxford Owl is the Spelling scheme that we use in school. Children can now have access to many different Spelling resources and activities from home. There is also a variety of ebooks that children can read!

In school we spend 15 minutes a day doing spelling activities. It would be great if this could be continued from home.

Science

As part of our Science topic, we are researching famous scientists. This week, we would like you to take the ‘Women in Science’ quiz on PurpleMash. This quiz questions you about famous female scientists and their fascinating scientific work. To be able to answer each question, you will need to do a little research on the scientist in question. This quiz can be found on PurpleMash as a 2Do.

Once you’ve found out about the different scientists, we would like you to consider which scientist you found most interesting to learn about. You can write a couple of sentences about why you’ve chosen your scientist and what you found so interesting on the back of a postcard. This can also be found on PurpleMash as a 2Do.

Mental Health awareness week

Today marks the beginning of Mental Health awareness week! The theme for this year is ‘kindness’. To celebrate, we would like you to carry out a random act of kindness. This could be anything from helping with a household chore, sending a letter to a loved one or helping a vulnerable neighbour.

There are lots more ideas in the Mental Health awareness week pack, which you’ll find in the ‘Files to Download’ section.

As always, we love seeing what you get up to so we’d love you to take a photo of your act of kindness and send it to year5@wistastonacademytrust.co.uk.

Have a bit of fun with this week with a Viking Gods and Goddesses pairs game! Can you remember what they looked like and what their names were?

This has been set as a 2Do on PurpleMash.
