Welcome to Reception: We are looking forward to working with you and your child over the forthcoming year.

P.E. teacher: Mrs Adamczyk is the Reception P.E. teacher.

Early Years Foundation Stage

The children in Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and work towards the seven areas of Learning and Development. It is a very holistic approach to learning and places a strong emphasis on the individual child. It is a continuation from the active learning the children have been involved in at Nursery/Pre-School and culminates in the Foundation Stage Profile which assesses all areas of learning for your child. At the end of the year we will provide you with a written report based around the Foundation Stage Profile.

What will my child’s learning look like?

Play and exploration is a fundamental in Reception. It means children are able to choose activities where they can engage with other children or adults or sometimes play alone. During these activities the children will learn by first-hand experiences; by actively ‘doing’ as well as through scaffolding and modelling by adults. We will provide them with sufficient space, both indoors and outdoors, time and choice with a range of activities. There will be a good variety of planned and prepared learning activities by the teachers such as Read, Write Inc, Maths and themed interests as well as allowing time for the children to initiate their own learning.

Excellent attendance is vital for achieving your child’s potential. The classroom door opens at 8:40am for morning registration. There will be a member of the Reception team waiting at the classroom door to welcome your child. If you have a message for your child's class teacher, unless it is urgent, if possible, please arrange to speak to them at the end of the school as mornings are a busy time.

It is important that your child arrives on time for school every day. This helps them to settle into the school day quickly and calmly. This has a positive impact on their ability to engage in their learning.

School finishes at 3.05pm and children need to be collected from classrooms at this time. Please ensure your child is aware who is collecting them at the end of the day and notify the class teacher and/or school office of any changes to your arrangements.

What does your child need to bring to school every day?

Please ensure that your child has a labelled water bottle in school every day. This will enable your child to have access to a drink as and when they need to during the school day. The water bottle will be sent home at the end of each day so that it can be washed and returned to school again the following morning. We request that the water bottle contains only water and not other liquids such as juice or milk. Your child may of course bring juice to drink with their packed lunch and juice/ water are available for children who are having a school dinner at lunchtime.

Your child will need to bring their book bag daily. This will allow them to carry their Read, Write Inc book and a library book into school. Reception children will visit the library with every Wednesday during the school day. The library is open to parents and children after the school day has finished every day except for Wednesdays. You can access the library through the main office reception.

Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. The school does not have a supply of spare clothes for children so it is essential that they are well dress e.g. a waterproof coat with a hood and appropriate waterproof footwear for wet weather etc.

Your child must have wellies in school everyday to be able to access the outdoor learning provision.

Reception has P.E. every Wednesday afternoon. Please make sure that your child has a named kit, which includes black pumps or trainers, black shorts and a green or white t-shirt. Long hair needs to be tied back.

All earrings need to be removed before school or the lesson for P.E. sessions. Where ears have recently been pierced, it is essential that children have their own plasters from home to cover their earrings. This needs to be done either at home or by the child themselves. This is in line with the school policy.

Working with Parents & Carers

You will have been shown how to access your child’s online electronic journal on Tapestry as part of your child’s ‘Including Me’ Meeting. Shortly, you will be receiving an email notification from Tapestry which will enable you to set up your own password to access your child’s learning journal.

We encourage all parents/carers to add comments to the Reception Team’s observations and to add your own observations of your child’s learning and experiences at home. Your contributions to your child’s learning journal are greatly valued and help to inform the Reception Team.

Read Write Inc

Your child will bring home Read Write Inc sound sheets or books each Friday to share with you at home. Please support them by listening to them read and asking simple questions about what they have read and practise the new sounds and words they have learnt. They might also enjoy teaching you how to read the sounds and words they have learnt. Read Write Inc books need to be returned to school every Thursday.

There will be a charge of £2 for lost or damaged Read Write Inc books.

Reception children have the opportunity to drink a carton of milk each day if parents wish. Milk is free of charge.

The school’s fruit scheme provides snacks of fruit and vegetables for Reception children. This is available for them to eat daily at playtime. Please do not send in additional snacks.

Reception Fund

We ask for a voluntary contribution of £2 per half term. This money helps us to buy items such as small pieces of equipment, baking ingredients, seeds, food as part of a topic etc.
